Faculty Leader: J Greenwood
In Languages we strive to make learning languages a fun, enriching and engaging experience and we focus on developing both our students’ language skills and cultural awareness. We know that both employers and higher education providers value language skills highly and by learning a language, you become part of a much wider world. It is now incredibly important for students to achieve a good language GCSE as part of the EBacc and many Russell Group universities have also stipulated this as an entry requirement.
We want our students to develop a love for languages that they will hopefully retain for the rest of their lives. Moreover, learning a language improves how your brain functions! You develop other crucial skills, such as problem solving and decoding, while also broadening your vocabulary in your own mother tongue. It’s a skill for life!
Our faculty also regularly organises enrichment visits abroad and in partnership with local universities and providers
GCSE French, German & Spanish
For French, Spanish and German we follow the new GCSE Edexcel Specification. There is no longer a coursework element at GCSE and all 4 skills (listening, reading, writing & speaking) will be assessed at the end of the course and are weighted equally (25% for each skill). During their studies, students will build on their learning from Key Stage 3, developing their skills in translation, the use of correct grammar, spontaneous speaking and extended writing. They will also have opportunities to read literary texts and authentic materials from the countries where the target language is spoken.
Students currently follow the AQA GCSE course for Urdu where they are able to develop their Urdu language skills in a variety of contexts as well as gain a greater awareness of the culture of countries and communities where Urdu is spoken.
GCSE Arabic students follow the Edexcel specification and are given opportunities to develop an understanding of the language in a range of contexts, to communicate with greater proficiency in Arabic as well as gain a broader knowledge of its vocabulary and structures.
