New Basics – Combining real world experience with an intrinsic drive
Welcome to New Basics
‘We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future’ – George Bernard Shaw
The New Basics Curriculum is futures-oriented, which provides the students with 21st Century skills that will enable them to flourish in ‘new times’.
The Curriculum is ‘transdisciplinary’ – in other words, rather than focus on subject areas in isolation, our students cover all areas of knowledge at GSCE level and beyond whilst tackling real life issues and organising community events. Cognition is our primary focus for the New Basics Curriculum. We create self regulating, confident, independent and curious learners. When talking about New Basics, it is necessary to hold on to the notion of the ‘Old Basics’, which include Literacy and Numeracy and will always remain at the heart of New Basics.
The New Basics Curriculum is delivered by learning and teaching strategies called ‘The Productive Pedagogies’. The ‘Productive Pedagogies’ underpin the basic art of teaching and is one of the many driving forces behind the mission statement here at Essa Academy ‘All will Succeed’.
Social Capital in Year 7 is entwined with the New Basics Curriculum. Social Capital begins whilst the students are still in Year 6 during Primary Transition where all students are visited within their primary settings followed by a taster dat at the the Academy, followed by parents meeting. This gives all students and parents the opportunity to interact with the New Basics team. When students arrive in September they take part in our induction programme, which enables them to form friendships and relationships with staff early. Students settle quickly and are happy and confident.
New Basics Staff are approachable and accessible for all students and parents alike.
