Attendance

Good attendance at the Academy is not just beneficial it is essential. Attendance is directly linked to improved exam performance which should in turn lead to further learning opportunities and better job prospects. As well as this, going to school helps to develop:

  • Friendships

  • Social Skills

  • Team Values

  • Life Skills

  • Cultural awareness

  • Career pathways

Achieving 90% in an exam or test is a fantastic result but if your child is at the Academy for only 90% of the school year then they will have missed 20 days – four whole weeks of learning.

How to prevent your child from missing school:

  • Having a routine and sticking to it.

  • Making sure your child understands the importance of good attendance and punctuality.

  • Making sure they understand the possible implications for themselves and you as a parent/carer if they do not attend.

  • Taking an interest in their education – ask about schoolwork and encourage them to get involved in Academy activities.

  • Discussing any problems, they may have at the Academy and letting us know.

  • Not letting them take time off for minor ailments or holidays in term time.

If your child is going to be absent from the Academy, then you should let us know as soon as possible. If your child has been absent due to unexpected event, then you must also let us know on the first day of absence in accordance with the Academy Attendance Policy. If you fail to notify us as to why your child is absent, then we will record that period of absence as being unauthorised.

Coming to the Academy regularly is important for your child’s future. Parents/Carers are legally responsible for making sure that their children attend. If your child does not come to the Academy you could be fined or prosecuted by the Local Authority.

The Local Authority can apply to the Courts to fine parent/carers of children who are not attending regularly. In a Magistrates Court each parent/carer could be fined up to £1,000 for each child who misses school.
